The Ocean is Broken

The ocean is broken, words of Newcastle sailor Ivan Macfadyen used to describe the seas he travelled in 2013 whilst on a volunteer trip to monitor water for radiation. Ivan reported on an ocean of rubbish and debris.

countless hundreds of wooden power poles are out there, snapped off by the killer wave and still trailing their wires in the middle of the sea.

Familiar with the area he was testing, Macfayden commented that since his last visit, things had radically changed. Now there were no seabirds, he managed to catch only 2 undersized fish and the the air was mainly silent, bar the noise when his vessel hit debris.

Artist Zaria Forman documents climate change, her ethereal imagery of melting glaciers, land under threat from rising sea levels, oceans of floating ice and shimmering sun on arctic icescapes are immensely impressive. Here are a few examples..
